Petite douceur pop venue de Suède, j’ai pu découvrir il y a quelques semaines le premier single d’Alpaca Sports que m’avait alors proposé son chanteur Andreas Jonsson.
Il ne me fallu pas bien longtemps pour succomber à leur musique à la fois fouillée et entrainante, et légèrement vintage Le meilleur dans tout ça, c’est qu’Andreas m’a accordé une interview et je vous propose donc de découvrir maintenant sur indiemusic, le projet Alpaca Sports, en français, mais aussi dans la suite dans sa version originale anglaise. - Salut Andreas ! Ta musique sonne très pop, avec un côté vintage entre ce que font Beach Fossils et Belle and Sebastian. Que penses-tu de cette comparaison ?
Je n’ai pas vraiment beaucoup écouté Beach Fossils donc je ne pourrais pas te dire pour la comparaison, à l’inverse de Belle and Sebastien qui a été l’un de mes groupes préférés pendant pas mal d’années.
J’ai connu des périodes dans ma vie où je n’arrivais plus à dormir. Et durant l’une de ces périodes, j’ai passé huit heures à dormir éveillé chaque nuit en écoutant en boucle « If You’re Feeling Sinister ». Ainsi, même si je ne pense pas vraiment ça de moi, j’imagine que Belle and Sebastian trainera toujours quelque part dans le fond de ma mémoire. Et ce même si actuellement, ce n’est plus trop ce que j’écoute.
- Quand as-tu commencé ce projet ?
Je dirais que ce projet est dans ma tête depuis pas mal de temps, mais ça m’a pris un temps fou pour parvenir au son que je voulais produire. J’ai toujours eu des idées claires quant aux sentiments que je voulais exprimer et comment je voulais que ma musique me fasse ressentir, mais ça a été difficile pour moi d’y parvenir.
J’ai essayé de faire de la musique électronique, et de chanter en suédois (et même en français). Mais, un jour, j’ai choisi de revenir aux bases et de n’utiliser que de vrais instruments. Et après ça j’ai commencé à écrire de nouvelles chansons qui sonnaient comme je l’entendais. Et les idées provenant d’anciennes chansons ont pu être réarrangées pour s’accorder au nouveau son. And j’ai reçu une grande aide d’amis pour finaliser les pistes, et plus particulièrement encore de Carl Jirestedt, qui m’a aidé à fignoler tous mes morceaux.
- Peux-tu me parler de la fille qui est avec toi sur cette photo ?
Elle s’appelle Amanda et elle fait les choeurs sur mes deux singles, on l’entend surtout sur « Just for fun ». C’est la copine d’un ami de longue date, et j’ai toujours été fasciné par la très charmante voix d’Amanda quand elle parle. Après quelques investigations, j’ai découvert qu’elle chantait également. Maintenant, je suis vraiment ravi qu’elle ait accepté de prendre part à ce projet !
- Alpaca Sports est un projet qui s’est construit entouré d’amis. Peux-tu me dire quelque chose d’original au sujet de chacun d’eux et ce qu’ils t’ont apporté dans ce projet ?
Haha, oh, ils sont tellement nombreux !
Il y a d’abord Carl qui m’a aidé à écrire les chansons. Je connais (je crois) Carl depuis mes six ans et nous avons toujours été les meilleurs amis depuis. Nous avons joué dans de nombreux projets musicaux ensemble par le passé, et nous sommes en fait allés jouer à Paris pour son projet solo Windowkisser (qui s’appelait auparavant One) il y a quelque temps. Nous avons joué au Motel et au Pop In, et c’était vraiment sympa ! Il est comme un frère pour moi.
J’ai mentionné la voix sublime d’Amanda auparavant et je peux maintenant partager un chouette souvenir de l’enregistrement de notre clip musical.
Dans cette ferme d’alpaga, où nous avons tourné la plupart du matériel pour la vidéo, ils ont aussi eu des chiots nouveau-nés. Lorsque nous étions assis autour de la table pour prendre du café, le propriétaire de la ferme a proposé à Amanda de prendre l’un d’eux. De l’autre bout de la table, j’ai vu que des larmes coulaient sur son visage et je lui ai demandé ce qui n’allait pas. « Ce petit chiot est trop mignon », m’a-t-elle répondu. Un souvenir adorable !
Hampus joue quant à lui la batterie dans Alpaca Sports et j’avais joué avec lui auparavant dans d’autres projets. C’est le meilleur batteur à ma connaissance et un très bon ami. Il sera le batteur de Jens Lekman au cours de sa tournée à venir.
Olle joue de la base sur ce single et je lui suis très reconnaissant pour ça. D’habitude, Olle joue du rock’n’roll donc c’était un nouveau challenge pour lui, mais qu’il a parfaitement accompli ! Quand nous étions en train d’enregistrer « Just for fun », nous avons rencontré quelques difficultés à trouver le bon son au début et Olle était quelque peu angoissé et frustré. C’est un contraste amusant d’enregistrer une musique pop décomplexée en colère.
Kalle von Hall a enregistré, mixé et produit ce single. Il savait exactement comment elle voulait que le son soit et je n’y serais pas parvenir sans son aide. C’est un génie. J’enregistrerais mon prochain single avec lui, c’est certain !
Diana, elle, joue du violon et je pense qu’elle est vraiment douée. J’ai toujours enregistré des démos des titres avant de les faire produire, et je suis à chaque fois impressionné comme le simple arrangement que je fais sur Garageband peut s’approcher de ce qu’elle joue en live.
Hans Olsson Brookes a masterisé les titres et visiter son studio de mastering c’est comme entrer dans un dirigeable. J’ai eu le vertige, mais je garde de très bons souvenirs de ce passage dans son studio !
- Tu es l’une des nouvelles signatures de Luxury, comment as-tu fait la connaissance de Rasmus, alias Mr Luxury ? Comme t’aide-t-il à promouvoir ce premier single ?
Il y avait près de dix labels qui étaient partant pour sortir notre single d’une façon ou d’une autre, mais ils tous situés très loin de Gothenburg. J’ai envoyé à Rasmus un email lui demandant son avis sur ma musique. Il m’a dit qu’il aimait et à partir de là, tout est allé très vite pour arriver à l’étape de la sortie physique !
Rasmus et Luxury m’ont beaucoup aidé pour la promotion et je suis très fier de participer à ce label. Je partage le même sentiment avec Dufflecoat Records.
- À propos de ce disque, qui sera comme tu l’as dit un double single -dis-moi si je me trompe – pourra-t-on se le procurer en France ?
Exactement, c’est un double single que j’ai sorti dans un format vinyle 7″ sur les labels Luxury et Dufflecoat Records (UK) en 300 exemplaires. Le single a été présenté le 22 mars et il est déjà écoulé. Mais je pense (je m’excuse si je me trompe) que vous pouvez trouver quelques exemplaires restants sur Paris à Hands and Arms et aux Balades Sonores. Il doit rester entre 5 et 10 exemplaires sur dufflecoatrecords.com également si vous voulez le commander en ligne !
- Après la sortie de ce premier album, prévois-tu d’enregistrer toujours plus de titres afin de parvenir à ton premier album ou est-ce trop tôt pour aborder cette idée ?
Oui, je retourne en studio le 2 avril afin d’enregistrer mon prochain single ! Il sortira en format 7″ bien sûr et je suis impatient d’y être ! Suite à ça, je démarrerais le travail sur l’album complet, qui je l’espère sera prêt pour cet automne.
- Peux-tu me donner quelques lieux pour rencontrer des groupes ou des personnes sympas à Göteborg ?
Je peux recommander un lieu qui s’appelle Pustervik, à côté de Järntorget. Il est en cours de rénovation, mais devrait rouvrir prochainement. De très bons groupes ont joué ici et il y règne une atmosphère agréable.
- Prévois-tu de jouer en France à l’occasion d’une tournée ?
Je n’ai pas vraiment grand-chose de prévu pour le moment, mais j’adorerais. J’ai vécu à Paris en 2009 et j’ai toujours des amis qui y vivent donc j’espère bien leur rendre visite cet été, et ça serait fantastique si je pouvais y jouer bien évidemment !

- Hi Andreas ! Your music sound really pop, with some vintage touch between Beach Fossils and Belle and Sebastian. Do you like this comparison ?
I haven’t really listened to Beach Fossils that much so I don’t know about that comparison, but Belle and Sebastian has been a favorite of mine for a very long time.
I’ve had periods in my life when I haven’t been able to sleep. And during one of the longest of these periods I spend 8 hours of “sleep” each night listening to If you’re feeling sinister on repeat. So even if I don’t think about it myself, I guess Belle and Sebastian will always be there at the back of my mind. Even though, I don’t listen to them that much at the moment.
- How did you start this project?
I guess this project has been in my head for quite some time but it took a while to make it sound the way I wanted it to sound like. I’ve always had a very clear idea about what feelings I want to express and how I want my music to make me feel, but it has been difficult to get there. I’ve tried to make electronic music, to sing in Swedish (and even French). But one day I decided to keep everything very simple and to only use real instruments. And after that I started to write new songs that knew exactly which way to go. And old song ideas were easy to re-arrange to suit the new sound. And I’ve had great help from friends to finish the songs. Especially from Carl Jirestedt, who helped me to get the songs finished.
- Who’s the girl on the photo with you?
Her name is Amanda and she sings back up-voices on both of the single’s two tracks, mostly on Just for fun. She’s my girlfriend’s friend from the beginning and I’ve always been fascinated by Amanda’s sweet voice when she talks. After some investigation I found out that she also sings. Now I’m so happy that she wants to be in the project!
- Alpaca Sports is your project made with some friends. Can you say something original about each one and how they help you for this project?
Haha, oh they are so many!
First of all there’s Carl who’s helping me write the songs. I’ve known Carl since I was 6years old (I think) and we’ve been best friends since then. We’ve been playing music together in a lot of different projects in the past and we actually went to Paris to play with his solo project Windowkisser (formerly known as One) a couple of years ago. We played at Le Motel and Pop In and we had a great time! He’s like a brother to me.
I mentioned Amanda’s beautiful voice earlier but I can also share a sweet memory from the recordings of the music video. At this alpaca farm, where we shot most of the material for the video they also had newly born puppies. When we were sitting around the table drinking coffee the owner of the farm let Amanda hold one of them. From the other side of the table I saw tears running down Amanda’s face and I asked her what’s wrong. This little puppy is too cute she replied, haha. The sweetest thing ever!
Hampus plays the drums in Alpaca Sports and I’ve been playing with him earlier in other projects. He’s the best drummer I know and a really good friend. He’ll be playing drums with Jens Lekman during his upcoming tour.
Olle plays the bass on this single and I’m so grateful for that. Usually Olle plays rock’n’roll so this was a new challenge for him, but he did perfect! While recording Just for fun we had difficulties finding the right feeling at first and that made Olle really angry and frustrated. That was a fun contrast, recording cute twee pop in anger.
Kalle von Hall recorded, mixed and produced this single. He knew exactly what I wanted it to sound like and I couldn’t have done this without him. He’s a genius. I’ll record the next single with him as well!
Diana plays the viola and I think she’s very talented. I always record demos of the songs before rehearsing them and I’m always amazed about how the simple string arrangements I make in Garageband sounds like when she’s playing it live.
Hans Olsson Brookes mastered the songs and visiting his mastering studio is like going into an airplane. I got dizzy but left the studio with a big smile on my face!
- You are the new signature of Luxury, how did you met Rasmus aka Mr Luxury ? How did he will help you to promote your first single ?
There were around 10 labels that were interested in releasing the single in one way or another but they were all situated so far away from Gothenburg. I send Rasmus an email wondering if he liked it. He did and from there it went very quick to turn the songs into a physical release! Rasmus and Luxury has helped me a lot with promotions and I’m proud to be a part of the label. I feel the exact same way with Dufflecoat Records.
- About this record, this will be a two tracks single, tell me if i’m wrong? How can we get it in France?
Exactly, this is a two-track single released on a 7” by the labels Luxury and Dufflecoat Records (UK) in 300copies. The single was released on March 22 and is almost sold out already. But I think (I’m sorry if I’m wrong) that you can buy a few copies of the single in Paris at Hands and Arms and Balades Sonores. There are 5-10copies left at dufflecoatrecords.com too if you want to buy it online!
- After releasing this first single, are you planning to record more and more tracks to release your first album or it’s too early to talk about this idea?
Yes, I’m going into the studio again on April 2 to record the next single! It will be released on a 7” as well and I’m really looking forward to it! After that I will start working on a full length album which hopefully will be released this autumn.
- What are the best places to meet some great bands or people in Göteborg?
I can recommend a place called Pustervik near Järntorget. It’s being renovated at the moment but will soon open up again. A lot of good bands have played there in the past and it has a nice atmosphere.
- Are you planning to come in France for a tour?
Nothing planned at the moment but I would love to! I lived in Paris in 2009 and still have friends living there so I hope to visit this summer, it would be fantastic if I could play there as well!
