Peu avant leur concert au Dour Festival, nous avons discuté planchers qui craquent, rock’n’roll et tatouages avec les sympathiques membres de Twin Peaks. Retour sur un échange parfois surréaliste mais plein d’humour.
- À quelle ville, ou type de ville, vous identifieriez-vous ?
Jack Dolan (basse, chant) : Chicago !
Cadien Lake James (guitare, chant) : Oui, Chicago !
- Quel défaut est nécessaire à un musicien ?
Clay Frankel (guitare, chant): Je pense qu’il faut un peu ignorer comment les choses fonctionnent, comment jouer en live et comment jouer d’un instrument. Il est très intéressant de savoir que l’on fait son propre truc, que ce soit assez personnel.
Cadien Lake James: C’est plus créatif et unique.
- Que signifie être un rocker de nos jours, selon vous ?
Cadien Lake James : Tu sais, je ne pense pas que ce soit plus exceptionnel aujourd’hui, c’est simplement du rock’n’roll et il occupe diverses formes.
Clay Frankel : Mais tu pouvais avoir de la nourriture gratuitement, des bières gratuites. C’était offert, auparavant ; maintenant, nous devons nous battre pour les obtenir. Nous ne sommes pas toujours capables de les acheter, donc nous devons beaucoup travailler.
Jake Dolan : Tu peux être rock dans tout ce que tu fais, ça peut être très rock de cuisiner, ça peut être vraiment rock de…
Clay Frankel : de tirer et mourir !
Jack Dolan : Ouais, de tirer et mourir.
Colin Croom (clavier, guitare, chant): Ça peut juste être rock de boire au bar.
Cadien Lake James : C’est simplement un état d’esprit.
- Vos principales influences musicales sont Bowie, T-Rex, les Stones, mais quelles sont vos « non-références » absolues ?
Clay Frankel : Euh, je ne sais pas. Je déteste lorsque les gens aiment des trucs cool pêchus et estivaux, je n’aime pas cette description pour un groupe.
Cadien Lake James : Oh, pêchu ! Nous venons d’une ville hivernale, où il fait froid.
Clay Frankel : C’est très détendu, bien estival…
Cadien Lake James : …avec des « summer vibes » !
Clay Frankel : Ouais ! Je hais ça !
Cadien Lake James : Les gens adorent dire que, puisque nous buvons beaucoup de bière, beaucoup de nos créations suintent la bière et des conneries du genre. On aime la bière !
- Qu’est-ce que tourner avec Hinds vous a apporté ?
Cadien Lake James : Eh bien, c’était une expérience géniale, pleine de joie, parce que nous avions déjà joué ensemble à plusieurs reprises ; mais là, nous avons pu passer plusieurs semaines avec elles. Chaque jour était explosif et plusieurs de leurs amis espagnols nous ont rejoints sur la tournée.
Clay Frankel : Je pense que nous nous sommes rapprochés. Elles sont comme des amies, c’est super de partir en tournée avec d’autres gens.
Jack Dolan : Avec le recul, tout est plus fort, plus vrai, qu’un simple bon moment.
- Qu’est-ce qui est le plus plaisant dans le fait d’être tous ensemble en tournée ?
Cadien Lake James : Je ne sais pas, je n’ai jamais tourné seul.
Clay Frankel : Je suis déjà parti avec ma famille, en vacances et c’était… je préfère ça aux vacances en familles. Je suis navré, ‘Pa.
- Avec qui aimeriez-vous partir en tournée ?
Clay Frankel : Mort ou vivant ?
- Dans vos rêves, avec qui, quel groupe aimeriez-vous partir ?
Clay Frankel : Les Stones…
Cadien Lake James : J’aimerais bien être roadie pour Grateful Dead !
Clay Frankel : J’aimerais bien aussi être en tournée avec Grateful Dead, ou The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned.
Jack Dolan : Ça, c’est bien !
Clay Frankel : C’est aussi éphémère : ils ont donné deux concerts et le reste a été annulé. Aujourd’hui, Black Lips.
Cadien Lake James : Ouais, ça a l’air bien.
Clay Frankel : Deerhunter, Cage the Elephant… Nous aimerions être en tournée avec Cage (Twin Peaks a tourné aux côtés de Cage the Elephant au printemps dernier en Europe, NDLR)… Sinon n’importe qui, tu sais. Rage Against the Machine, juste pour rencontrer de nouvelles personnes.
Cadien Lake James : System of a Down !
Clay Frankel : System of a Down, bien sûr ! Mais les Stones du début des 70’s serait l’offre que nous choisirions en premier !
- Quel a été le public le plus fou ou fanatique que vous ayez eu ?
Clay Frankel : Brighton ! Ils ont démoli le sol. Je ne sais pas si le public était fou ou si le bâtiment était en ruines.
Cadien Lake James : On nous appelle « The Perfect Storm » (« En Pleine Tempête », film catastrophe américain de 2000 avec George Clooney, NDLR).
Clay Frankel : Destruction dans une foule sauvage. C’est marqué dans ma mémoire.
Cadien Lake James : Bristol. C’était à Bristol.
Clay Frankel : Oui, c’était Bristol, parce que Brighton est en bord de mer et ce n’était pas en bord de mer.
- Vous êtes une espèce de « self-made band » ; avez-vous le sentiment d’avoir accompli une sorte de rêve américain ? Et d’avoir contribué à rendre à l’Amérique sa grandeur (making « America great again ») ?
Tous : Ooooh ! Noooooon ahah !
Cadien Lake James : Je ne sais pas si tu sais, mais je crois que c’était fortuit. Le « rêve américain » est une connerie, aujourd’hui nous ne sommes pas fiers d’être américains.
Cadien Lake James : Nous vivons un rêve.
Clay Frankel : Nous sommes chanceux d’être où nous sommes aujourd’hui, mais… je ne sais pas, l’Amérique mec… c’est plein de personnes géniales, mais une sombre merde se répand en ce moment. C’est très sombre, mais nous faisons de notre mieux, nous faisons ce qu’il y a de mieux à faire chaque jour.
- Y a-t-il un tic, une chose, qui rend vos amis fous ?
Cadien Lake James : Un conte ? Une histoire ? (en anglais, « tell » qui signifie « tic » et est proche de « tail », qui signifie « conte », NDLR).
Clay Frankel : J’ai rendu mon père plutôt jaloux lorsque j’ai rencontré Bruce Springsteen. Il est devenu dingue.
Cadien Lake James : Ouais, il faut dire que Bruce Springsteen est aimé de tous.
- Si chacun de vous pouvait faire un tatouage à un autre, que choisiriez-vous et où le placeriez-vous ?
Clay Frankel : Je ferais un tatouage du Grateful Dead sur le bas de sa joue gauche boutonneuse (en désignant Cadien, NDLR).
Cadien Lake James : C’est ma meilleure joue ! Je pense que je ferais…
Jack Dolan et Clay Frankel : Une tête de cochon !
Cadien Lake James : Oh non, voyons ! Je tatouerais une chemise de flanelle rouge sur son corps (en désignant Clay, NDLR).
Clay Frankel : Putain ! J’avais une bonne référence, plus recherchée.
- Si vous étiez un sorcier, en quoi ou qui aimeriez-vous vous transformer ?
Cadien Lake James : Oh, si je pouvais, je serais un oiseau, j’aimerais voler, un putain de vautour.
Clay Frankel : Oui, j’aimerais être un oiseau que personne ne peut manger. J’ai pensé à un poisson, mais tu sais…
Cadien Lake James : Un oiseau qui impose le respect…
Colin Croom : Ce serait cool, sinon, d’être un iguane. Ce serait sympa d’être un lézard : ils peuvent nager trente minutes, ils peuvent nager sans être des poissons.
Clay Frankel : Mais on pourrait aussi être quelqu’un d’autre…
Jack Dolan : Ouais… J’aimerais changer d’âme, j’aimerais être une personne célèbre, essayer pour une semaine ou un mois…
Clay Frankel : Je serais curieux : peut-être une cassette de « Eyes Wide Shut ».
Cadien lake James : Je voudrais être ce microphone.
- Selon vous, quelle est la meilleure façon de mourir ?
Cadien Lake James : Pour ma mort… quelque chose d’indolore. Je suis heureux.
Clay Frankel : Il y a tant de façon de mourir, comme l’immolation… Je pense que peu importe où tu meurs ou comment tu meurs. J’aimerais mourir en paix avec mes proches autour, ils me tiendraient la main et je leur dirais « je vous aime, les gars ».
Jack Dolan : J’aimerais mourir en paix et plus drogué que jamais.
Clay Frankel : Ah non, non pas du tout, je veux mourir dans mon lit.
Jake Dolan : J’aimerais mourir comme une star de cinéma ; je ne veux pas mourir à l’hôpital.
Clay Frankel : J’aimerais mourir dans l’espace.

- To which town, or type of town, would you identify yourself?
Jack Dolan: Chicago!
Cadien Lake James : Chicago yes !
- Which shortcoming, which flaw, is necessary to a musician?
Clay Frankel : I guess a bit ignorance about how things work and how to perform and how to play an instrument. If you really know you doing your own thing it’s pretty interesting.
Cadien Lake James : Little bit more creative and unique for sure.
- What to be a rocker means nowadays?
Candien Lake James: You know, I don’t know if it has to be different than it used to be or anything, it’s just rock’n’roll and it takes many forms.
Clay Frankel: But you could get free food, free beer. Those were giving in those days, we’ve got to fight for now, you know. We’re not always able to get these stuffs so we’ve got pretty worked.
Jack Dolan: You can be rock’n’roll in anything you do , it can be really rock’n’roll to make food, it can be really rock’n’roll to…
Clay Frankel: To shoot and die!
Jake Dolan: To shoot and die yeah.
Colin Croom: It just can be really rock’n’roll drinking at the bar.
Cadien Lake James: It’s just a state of mind.
- Your musical influences are Bowie, T-Rex, the Stones, but which are your absolutely none references?
Clay Frankel: Hum I don’t know, I hate when people like cool stuff like peachy and summery, I don’t like that description for a band.
Cadien Lake James: Oh peachy! We come from a winter city you know, it’s cold.
Clay Frankel: “That’s a really lazy thing, a good summery…”
Cadien Lake James: With summer vibes!
Clay Frankel: Yeah I hate that!
Cadien Lake James: People like to say we drink a lot of beer a lot of things are “beer sucked” and stuff like that. We like beer!
- What does to turn with Hinds bring you?
Cadien Lake James: Well it was an awesome experience, it’s a lot of fun because we played a couple of time with them in the past but we’re able to spend a couple of weeks with them, everyday was a blast and they had a lot of friends that came from Spain to be on tour with them.
Clay Frankel: I think we just getting a lot closer. They’re like friends, it’s nice to be on tour with people.
Jack Dolan: Took away anything more faithful than just like a great time.
- What’s more pleasant in the fact to be on tour together?
Cadien Lake James: I don’t know, I’ve never been on tour solo.
Clay Frankel: I’ve been on some tours with my family, on vacations and those were… I enjoy this more than family vacation. I’m sorry ‘Pa.
- With who would you be on tour with?
Clay Frankel: Dead or alive?
- In your dreams, with whom, with which band would you be on tour with?
Clay Frankel: The Stones…
Cadien Lake James: I just wanna be a roadie for The Grateful Dead!
Clay Frankel: I would like too to be on tour with The Grateful Dead, or the Sex Pistols, the Clash, The Damned.
Jake Dolan: That’s a good one!
Clay Frankel: It’s actually a week one, they played two shows, the rest was cancelled. Nowadays Black Lips.
Cadien Lake James: Yeah it’s look good.
Clay Frankel: Deerhunter, Cage (Cage the Elephant), we loved to be on tour with Cage… hum anybody you know, Rage Against the Machine, just to meet some people you know.
Cadien Lake James: System of a Down!
Clay Frankel: System of a Down for sure! But Stones early 70’s, we’ll take that offer first!
- Which is the most crazy or fanatic crowd you had?
Clay Frankel: Brighton! They broke the floor. I don’t if the crowd was crazy or the building was shambles.
Cadien Lake James: We’re called The Perfect Storm!
Clay Frankel: Destruction in a wild crowd. That’s stick in my memory.
Cadien Lake James: Bristol. That was in Bristol.
Clay Frankel: Yeah that was Bristol, because Brighton is by the sea and that wasn’t by the sea.
- You’re a sort of self made band, do you have the feeling to accomplish an American dream? And also contributing to make “America great again”?
All together: Ooooh! Noooo ahah!
Clay Frankel: I don’t know if you know, I think that was unintentional. “American dream” is a lot of shit, right now we’re not proud of being American.
Cadien Lake James: We’re living in a dream.
Clay Frankel: We’re very lucky being where we are now, but… I don’t know, America man… a lot of good people in America but dark shit is going on right now. It’s pretty bleak, but you know we’re trying our best, doing the right thing everyday.
- Is there a tell, a thing, that makes your friends crazy?
Cadien Lake James: A tail? A story?
Clay Frankel: I made dad pretty jealous when I met Bruce Springsteen. He lost his mind, he was pretty blind away.
Cadien Lake James: Yeah, it means Bruce Springsteen is… everyone can appreciate.
- If each could make a tattoo to another, what would you choose and where, on the body, would you do it?
Clay Frankel: I would do a Grateful Dead tattoo (designating Cadien) on his lower left butt cheek.
Cadien Lake James: That’s my good butt cheek! Well, I would just put…
Jack Dolan and Clay Frankel: A pig face!
Cadien Lake James: Oh come on, no! I would tattoo a red flannel shirt on his body.
Clay Frankel: Damn! I had a good reference, smarter.
- If you had the capacity to be a wizard, in what or who would you transform yourself?
Cadien Lake James: Oh if I could I would like to be some sort of bird, I’d like to fly, a fucking vulture.
Clay Frankel: Yes, I wanna be a bird that no one else is gonna eat. Or I thought of a fish but you know…
Cadien Lake James: A bird that has a lot of respect…
Colin Croom: Also it’d be very cool to be an iguana, it’d pretty cool to be a lizard, they can swim for like thirty minutes, they can swim but they’re not fish.
Clay Frankel: But you also can be someone else, like a human…
Jack Dolan: Hum yeah… I’d like to change of spirit, I’d like to be a famous person, I would like to see for a week or a day…
Clay Frankel: I would be curious, maybe some Eyes Wide Shut tapes going on…
Cadien Lake James: Oh for sure! I would like to be that subwoofer.
- Which is the best way for you to die?
Cadien Lake James: For me to die.. something painless, I’m pretty happy.
Clay Frankel: There is so many other way, burning… I suppose dying and dead on, you know, whatever on what shit I’ll give you… I’d like to die peacefully with my loves around me, holding my hand and I’d tell them “I love you guys”.
Jack Dolan: I would like peacefully and druggiest.
Clay Frankel: No, no at all, I wanna die in my own bed.
Jack Dolan: I wanna die like movie stars, I don’t wanna die in a hospital.
Clay Frankel: I’d like to die in space.
