Phénomène folk islandais, Ásgeir Trausti jouait samedi 31 mai au festival We Love Green. Après son concert sous un soleil de plomb, nous avons rencontré le discret chanteur et guitariste de 21 ans pour discuter de son rapport aux langues, – son premier album étant sorti dans sa langue natale puis en anglais -, et de l’importance de sa famille dans son projet.

- Suite à ton concert à We Love Green, comment as-tu ressenti le public, le cadre ?
Oh, c’était vraiment bien. C’est la première fois que je joue dans un tel festival, avec ce genre de valeur et le soleil en pleine face.
- C’est le début de l’été !
Oh oui (rire). Ça fait bizarre, mais en même temps j’aime beaucoup ça. C’est comme jouer dans une forêt. C’est très vert !
- Et donc, tu aimes jouer dans des lieux verdoyants ?
Tu sais, c’est vraiment une super occasion de jouer dans ce type d’environnement, de faire partie de ces gens, de ce cadre.
- Au début de ton concert, tu as démarré par quelques morceaux en islandais, pourquoi ?
C’est simplement que j’aime chanter en islandais, et je sais que bon nombre de mes fans aiment la version islandaise de mon album, j’en chante donc toujours quelques-uns à chaque concert.
Sur certaines dates, j’en joue juste quelques-uns, sur d’autres, un peu plus. La plupart du temps, je mélange les titres en islandais et en anglais.
- Comment as-tu appréhendé le passage des textes de islandais vers l’anglais ?
Eh bien, après avoir chanté pendant six mois la version islandaise, nous avons travaillé sur la version anglaise. Les premiers mois furent difficiles, je n’arrivais pas à m’accorder avec les chansons, mais je m’y suis fait. Mais en même temps, tu sais, c’est juste une langue et une autre façon de chanter le titre. C’est juste qu’en anglais, on touche bien plus de personnes.
Mais bien sûr, ça sonne différemment. L’islandais n’est pas compris ni parlé de grand monde, mais je pense que les chansons conviennent mieux à la version islandaise du disque qu’à celle anglaise.
- On pourrait donc penser que l’islandais est d’une certaine façon plus poétique ?
C’est vraiment comme un art: la littérature et la musique sont vraiment connectées ici. La plupart des gens en Islande jouent d’un instrument, écrivent des poèmes et des paroles. Tous les enfants en classe jouent des instruments.
- Sur ton album en islandais, ton père a écrit une partie de textes, c’est bien ça ?
Quelques textes, oui. Il en a écrit sept, et trois autres ont été écrits par mon guitariste, qui est également un ami. J’ai grandi avec lui à la campagne.
- Peut-on parler d’une histoire de famille au sujet d’Ásgeir?
Oui, on peut dire ça, mon frère ainé a rejoint le groupe et nous nous connaissons très bien l’un l’autre, car nous avons commencé le groupe et grandi ensemble. C’est une bonne chose.
Et pas mal de mes amis sont dans le groupe, des gens que je connais pour la plupart depuis que je suis ado. Et mon producteur est également membre du groupe.
- Dernière question, suite à ce premier album, travailles-tu sur de nouveaux morceaux ?
De nouveaux morceaux ? Quand j’ai du temps, oui. Par contre, je n’aime pas écrire en tournée, ça ne me convient pas. C’est très difficile. Mais chaque fois que j’en ai l’occasion, j’essaye de me mettre à fond dans l’écriture. Pour le moment, nous avons enregistré 3 ou 4 nouveaux titres pour une future sortie.

- After your show at We Love Green, how do you feel about the people, about the place ?
Oh, I feel pretty good. It’s the first time I play at a festival like this, with this kind of values and with the sun in our eyes.
- It’s the beginning of the Summer!
Yeah (laughs). It’s weird, but at the same time, I really like it. It’s like playing in a forest. It’s really green.
- So you like green environments to play music?
You know, it’s great to be part of this festival, to be part of these people, of this environment.
- At the beginning of your show, you start with some songs in Icelandic, why?
Just because I like singing in Icelandic, and I know there’s a lot of fans who like the Icelandic version of my album so I always sing some songs in every concert.
On some, I do a few, on some, a little more. Most of the time, I mix it up.
- How do you feel about the switch between the Icelandic and the English version of your tracks?
Well, after singing the Icelandic version for half a year, we did the English version. The first months were difficult, I didn’t connect to the songs very well and I got used to it. But it’s the same thing, you know, it’s just the language and another way to sing the song. It’s just that in English, most people understand it.
But of course, it’s sounds a lot different. Icelandic is not a language many people understand and speak, but I think the songs fit more with the Icelandic version of the album rather than the English album.
- So, do you think Icelandic is more poetic in some ways?
It’s definitely like an art : literature and music are really connected here. Most people in Iceland play an instrument, write poem and lyrics. All the kids in class play some instruments.
- About your album in Icelandic, your father wrote some songs, right?
Some lyrics, yeah. He wrote seven of the lyrics, three others were written by the guitarist of the band who’s a friend of mine. I grew up with him in the countryside.
- And can we say your band is like a family affair?
Yes, you can say it because my older brother plays in my band and we really used to each other because we started band and grew up together. That’s a great thing.
And some friends of mine play in the band and I’ve known some of them since I was a teenager. My producer is in the band too.
- Last question, after this first album, are you working on new tracks?
New tracks? When I have the time, yeah. I don’t really like writing on tour, it doesn’t suit me well. It’s really hard. But every time I can, I try to write as much as I can. By now, we’ve recorded 3 or 4 new songs for a release.
